To enter the iconic entrance of the X2 (pronounced “cross-to”) is far more than the first step into one of the most famous design resorts of Thailand. You feel that you are crossing an invisible border into something new, a universe of its own, only slightly connected to the real world outside. One would not be surprised if a gentle voice announces “ready to take off” and the whole X2, like a flying saucer, lift off into the sky.
Describing the X2 by its elements, the majestic pool, the delicate design of the villas, their shameless luxurious bathing zones or the amply shaped restaurant 4k (pronounced “fork”), touches only the surface. The core quality of the X2 is beyond luxury.
The founders of the X2, Anthony & Kaewjai (Phaoenchoke) McDonald, together with local designer Jakaryn Aksaravadeewat and the team at BeGray, created something new, their own vision of a luxury resort by redefining luxury in completely new terms.
A subliminal mix of design and privacy creates a feeling of genuine, pure sensuality. Staying at the X2 is not about celebrating style for the sake of it, maybe not even being on holidays, it is rather finding yourself in an unpretentious yet perfect setting.
The beautiful large trees that are spread throughout the resort are respectfully honored by the architecture. The walls of the buildings are kindly interrupted wherever they grow, connecting the X2 design with the hosting natural beauty. As a guest one feels a bit like the trees: amid a space designed to let you grow.
You may find yourself in your garden or next to your pool, looking into the night sky, thinking “I should write a book”. The X2 is foremost a place that triggers your creativity, a canvas for your imagination, a sensual journey into yourself.

Chapter 1 | The Passage | The X2 | The Muang Kulaypan
During August 2010 we accompanied Ms. Julia Murakami to some of the finest resorts on Koh Samui. This is the first chapter of Murakami Samui, a special edition of the art resort, bringing together fine art and fine places. The hosting venues offered Ms. Murakami the chance to work on her ongoing project, The Japanese Guerilla Paparazzi and we tried to cover both, the participating resorts and the artistic work in progress. More pictures will be added over time before we go back for chapter 2.
We hope you enjoy this travelogue in progress as much as we did making it.
